Walter Murch - THX 1138 (1970, US, not electronic)
Monday, January 21, 2008, 12:45 AM - Music, - US, English
This is *not* the official soundtrack of Lalo Schifrin.

I recorded the sound of this first movie of George Lucas on my tape recorder with a microphone near the tv speaker when it was broadcasted on television, around 1973 I think.
I listened to this beautiful futuristic soundscape again and again. Till my tape recorder broke and was replaced by a cassette deck.

Some years ago THX 1138 came out on dvd, and it had a special feature: the soundtrack without the actors voices. A pity was, that also the voices of the electrogod and robocops were removed, which were essential for the atmosphere to me.
So I made my own mix where I brought back the voices of the cops and godmachine. I divided this mix more or less into the chapters of the movie.

Another extra on the dvd were comments from Walter Murch you could jump to during the film. I extracted these explanations, removed the ehh's and ahh's, added some sound references and included them too.

Thank you so much for the effort! As little as I like most of GL's Hollywood crap, as much I love THX! And this homemade mix is a gem.
Thanks and keep up the good work, and your blog!

Intrigued to hear this. Strangely prescient this film in the light of the West's present trajectory (ie tranquilised worker-robots/consumers). Similarly 'Rollerball' (a rubbish film) a few years later has as its setting a political culture that echoes our's now in some important respects

"Are yoy now, or have you ever been?"

Again, this is another of my all-time favourite movies, a fantastic atmospheric "sound montage" by Walter Murch really adds so much to this movie.

Great work again on this project, many thanks

Great mix that recreates the mood of the movie. I saw this when I was 7, now I'm living amidst a THX'd version of Amerika, only the robot police are replaces by nihilistic ghetto gangs. But the sheepo, er people, are being led down the cattle-chutes of psychological warfare (post 9/11) and no-holds-barred commercialism. In the movie, there is a scene where THX wants to buy dinner, but the blue cubes are no longer manufactured, he has to buy an orange cube. Upset at this, he has a talk with God. Seems similar to the rapid changes in cellphone companies (mine has changed ownership 3x in the past 4 years)

Anyway, enough complaining, just enjoy the muse...

Aloha from Hawaii.

Dank voor de mix!

i just saw the dvd version of the movie and
i have to say i prefer the old cinema version,
why those extra 'new' CGscenes, they try to explain/reveal too much the story

ps goeie blog, paar hele leuke dingen ontdekt

Bummer, looks like link #1 is down.

I'd sure like to hear this complete recording, too. Is it possible for this mix to be reloaded?
