23 Skidoo - Live Aorta Amsterdam 1984
Thursday, March 8, 2012, 11:43 PM - Music, - UK, English
In 2007, Valeri from Bulgaria sent me a dvd-rom with various live recordings of post-punk bands. Surprisingly enough mostly from Dutch venues. A gift from a Dutch friend he explained later. A lot were Dutch radio broadcasts.
I totally forgot about this present until I saw it passing by while making a backup of my harddisk.

From the notes:
In 1984, the dutch radiostaion VPRO recorded a concert by 23 Skidoo in Aorta,
Amsterdam, a squat run by an artists collective.
There were always memorable performances and concerts there.
This is one of them !
Tracks (alas) unknown.

Sammie America's MAM - Live Vara's Popkaravaan 1983
Monday, November 21, 2011, 09:59 PM - Music, - NL, English

A lot of 'mechanical' bands existed around 1980 in the Netherlands. Sammie's MAM was imho one of the best. More musical and less artificial than the rest. Although a bit dated, Sammie still sounds fresh nowadays.

Vara's Popkaravaan (yes, MAM had to play on a campground, one of those lame ideas Dutch broadcasters come up with during summers)

1 Your world far world (partial) [1:53]
2 It's slipping away [5:26]
3 The Stockhausen sound [5:40]
4 Life is life [4:09]
5 Wat is dit [4:48]
6 This is the moment [9:11]

Doc Severinsen and The Now Generation Brass - Doc Severinsen's Closet (1970, US, Big Band)
Monday, October 31, 2011, 04:52 PM - Music, - US, English
I mainly bought this lp recently because it includes a big band version of The court of the Crimson King. The rest of this record is also not bad, big band wise.
It reminds me of the Quincy Jones lp Walking in Space: the music ranges from trippy to kitschy.
The recording contains covers of the Beatles and Beach Boys as well.
I wonder how it managed to escape from my attention for 40 years...

Side one:
1 The court of the Crimson King [7:31]
2 Bottleneck [3:14]
3 Surfer girl [2:44]
4 Give me just a little more time [2:57]

Side two:
1 Footprints of the giant [9:42]
2 Power to the people [2:55]
3 Abbey road medley [6:06]
